Long Island hippotherapy for kids

Hippotherapy can be an effective option for pediatric occupational therapy. Using mounted and unmounted techniques, the therapist can work on strengthening the body, developing skills, and supporting sensory processing.

Samantha of Playful OT Adventures is an American Hippotherapy Association (AHA) approved provider, offering hippotherapy as part of a well-rounded pediatric occupation therapy treatment plan.

Mounted and unmounted sessions are available, making hippotherapy accessible for all abilities and skill levels.

Unmounted sessions

For children who are unable to mount a horse for medical reasons, or because they simply aren’t ready, unmounted hippotherapy can be a valuable alternative.

During unmounted hippotherapy sessions, the therapist and child will work with miniature horses, or the smallest pony available. There are many ways to improve skills, like working on bilateral coordination, crossing midline, and practicing pre-writing strokes while grooming the animal. The use of hair clips, dressing boards, and other materials support hand strengthening and support fine motor skill development.

Nature-based activities are included in unmounted sessions, while working with the mini horse or pony. Walking the animal supports development of balance and coordination. Locating, gathering, and manipulating various materials in nature while walking the mini horse or pony supports fine and gross motor coordination.

Mounted sessions

For mounted sessions, the child rides the pony or horse under the careful supervision of the occupational therapist. This therapy provides sensory input, improves balance and confidence, and decreases anxiety. Coordination and fine motor skills are practiced and supported throughout the session.

Mounted sessions are offered both indoors and outdoors on a trail.
